甘い焼き芋！

I often get asked what my favorite Japanese food is. People are surprised to hear the answer, “Yaki imo!” Yaki imo is baked sweet potato in Japanese.
「好きな日本の食べ物は何ですか」という質問をよくされます。「焼き芋」と答えると、皆はとても驚きます。

It may sound ordinary, but Japanese sweet potatoes (Satsuma-imo) are really something special. And Kagoshima sweet potatoes just happen to be the best in Japan. As the largest producer in the country, Satsuma imo are an important part of Kagoshima’s culture.
普通の事かもしれませんが、日本のさつま芋は本当に特別なものです。そして、鹿児島のさつま芋はまた最高です。全国で最大の生産地のさつま芋は鹿児島の文化の中で重要な部分です。

American and Japanese sweet potatoes are quite different. The latter has a softer texture, and a sweeter and much more complex range of flavors. American sweet potatoes are a bright orange with a brown skin, while satsuma imo come in a variety of colors.
アメリカと日本のスイートポテトはかなり違います。日本の芋はより柔らかい食感で、より甘くて複雑な味です。アメリカのスイートポテトは茶色の皮で中身がオレンジ色です。日本のさつま芋は紫やベージュなどの色々な種類があります。

I already loved sweet potatoes when I lived in America, so coming to Kagoshima – the land of Sweet Potatoes – was a dream come true!
アメリカに住んでいたときも、スイートポテトが大好きだったので、「さつま芋の国」鹿児島に来ることはすごく嬉しかったです！

One chilly day while driving home from work, I had a craving for the burnt brown sugar flavor of a warm baked sweet potato. So when I saw a sign for “あまーい焼き芋” (sweet baked potatoes) on the side of the road, of course I had to pull over.
その日は寒かったので、仕事帰りに温かい焼き芋の焦げた黒糖風味が恋しくなりました。道路の脇に「あまーい焼き芋」の看板が見えたときは、すぐに立ち寄りました。

In addition to freshly baked sweet potatoes, the small roadside stand is filled with a variety of sweet potato treats, including chips and karintou– a fried dough snack.
小さな道端のスタンドには個々の焼き芋や袋詰めの焼き芋に加えて、チップや芋かりんとうや色々な焼き芋スナックもあります。

Behind the stand is a warehouse where the potatoes are prepared for distribution. You can find the signature brown-bagged goods at Daiwa in Kanoya and Tarumizu, and at the new michi no eki in Tarumizu. The sweet potato chips and karintou are also sold at Kitada Sarruga in Kanoya.
スタンドの後ろには、さつま芋を配達するための倉庫がありました。鹿屋と垂水のDaiwa、垂水のはまびら道の駅などで焼き芋のブラウンバッグを見かけます。甘い芋チップスも鹿屋のKitada Saruggaでも販売されています。

I learned from the kind shop staff that the company has been in business for 15 years! Impressive!
優しい店員さんからこの会社が15年間営業していることを教えてもらいました。すごく感動しました。

The individual yaki-imo are quite popular and were sold out by the time I got there in the late afternoon. So I took home a whole bag instead, along with some other sweet and salty fried treats.
一つからでも買えるので、ここの焼き芋はとても人気があります。午後遅くに私が着いた時には単体売りのコーナーは完売していました。その代わりに、いくつかの他さつま芋スナックと、茶色袋の焼き芋も持ち帰りました。

The sweet potato was incredibly silky and sweet, with the pockets of melty burnt-sugar inside the skin. Delicious!
さつま芋はとても柔らかくて甘く、焦げた皮の内側はカラメルのような感じがしてとても美味しかったです！
